MarchFourth Marching Band is a mobile big band spectacular, consisting of saxophones, trombones, trumpets and a drum/percussion corps, anchored by pumping battery-powered electric bass. Stilt-walkers, dancing girls, flag twirlers, clown antics, and acrobatics accompany this eclectic ensemble. The sound is huge, melodic, and dynamic, taking audiences on a musical journey around the globe. MarchFourth’s original material draws inspiration from an eclectic range of influences, such as gypsy brass, samba, funk, afro-beat, big-band, jazz, and rock music, as well as television, film, circus, and vaudeville.

MarchFourth is a date, a command, and a band. Imagine Duke Ellington meets Sgt. Pepper in an international big-top Fantasia. Imagine a 1920′s speakeasy where Mr. Bungle meets the Shogun Warriors in a PG Clockwork Orange. Imagine running into this giant spectacle marching through a festival, down a street, or onto stage. My Old Kentucky Blog Presents has been wowed by recent Pecha Kucha events in Indianapolis. So much so that we've decided to lend a hand in making Pecha Kucha 10 a special event and introduce it to more of the talented and culturally-supportive folks in the Indianapolis music scene. Pecha Kucha 10 will be centered on music and consist of ten presentations, each presenter having 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. Each presenter has just 6 minutes 40 seconds to explain their ideas before the next presenter takes the stage. Pecha Kucha was conceived as a venue through which idea-people could meet, show their work, exchange ideas, and network. The format keeps presentations concise, fast-paced and entertaining. The power of Pecha Kucha is that the success of each presentation relies purely on the presenter’s personality and the strength of their ideas.

The beauty of Pecha Kucha Night lies in the tension between the chaos of a full-blown party and the politeness (and sometimes not) of an art school crit, with the snappy pace holding it all together. Like any open-mic night, this is an intense fight for attention. On one side, the presenter “selling” his work or idea to the audience, on the other, the bar selling beer to the same audience.

Immediately following the Pecha Kucha presentations, MOKB and friends will welcome back Indianapolis music icons The Pieces. The Pieces lineup features all 3 original members including Vess Ruhtenberg, Heidi Gluck and Devon Ashley.

The Athenaeum Theatre is located at 401 E. Michigan Street, in the same complex that houses The Rathskeller and YMCA. The theatre entrance is located near the corner of New Jersey and Michigan Streets.

The box office will open at 7 PM. Enter through the main doors off of Michigan street (right next to the Rathskeller). Proceed up the steps to the lobby where you will find the Box Office table. The lovely Jessica will be waiting to assist you in picking up/purchasing your tickets. Once you are checked in, you will be able to go up to the 2nd level (Theatre Level) and drink at the bar until the main doors open at 7:30 PM. Anyone that will be drinking will need to have a wristband, which you can get directly next to the bar on the theatre level.

Doors to the show open at 7:30 PM. Seating is general admission. Seating is set up with 4 chairs at each table. Get there early and grab a seat right up front!

There is plenty of parking on Mass Ave, New Jersey and East Streets. There is also a parking lot to the East of the building but it will fill up fast!

This is a non-smoking event but we will offer pass-outs if you need to step out side for a moment.

This Saturday, May 1, The Earth House will host (RE)SONANCE; a fund-raising event that will benefit the venue's need for new sound system. The Earth House Collective is a not-for-profit organization operated by local artists, musicians and volunteers. The facility has the potential to become Indianapolis most treasured all ages venue. We demonstrated the possibilities with the OK Go show last Wednesday. If we can get a new sound system installed, this will instantly become a touring stop for national artists and will allow us to further our quest for more all ages shows in Indianapolis. The last three days have been a whirlwind! Japandorids killed it, Avi Bufflo surprised us, Bassnectar/Major Lazer melted faces and now tonight, annual Rock for Riley benefit featuring Julian Casablancas.

MGMT has amassed a laundry list of accolades over the past 3 years including 2 recent Grammy Nominations, the Most Played Artist on Last FM, and numerous NME awards. You are going to want to get your tickets in advance for this one. Seriously, we are not playin'. We suggest you set up camp Friday at 10 am, when tickets go on sale and snag them while you can. About Mayer Hawthorne
Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr.

After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. “He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love.” “It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.”

MOKB Presents is currently seeking a Graphic Design intern. We are looking for a talented, creative individual looking to establish build their portfolio by creating marketing materials for MOKB Presents concert events. The position requires 8-15 hours of work per week and provides the ability to work on a flexible schedule and work from home.

Internship Description:
Graphic design work/projects for marketing campaigns, advertising, collateral, web content, and other creative projects
This project will also require coordination with agencies, printers and photogrphers
Creation of print and collateral advertisements for concert events

Skills Required:
-Graphic design and editing skills in Photoshop and Illustrator
-Photo editing experience
-Ability to design and create layouts and mechanical files
- Basic HTML knowledge

Ben Sollee’s Learning to Bend was probably the most refreshing and breathtaking debut of 2008. And Daniel Martin Moore’s Stray Age was one of the most stunning folk debuts of that year, as well. Now both artists have joined forces to record Dear Companion, thus becoming the follow-up album for both enigmatic artists.

This inspired collaboration has made, what must be, one of the most starkly gorgeous albums you’ll hear this year. The lavish harmonies and interplay between these two unique voices give this album its stylistic thumbprint. Moore’s delicately plucked guitar and breezy croon wraps around Sollee’s unconventional cello and soulful R&B voice, without wrinkle. The songs themselves are cohesive and sweet, but wouldn’t feel at all out of place on a solo effort from either artist. And as was the case on Bend, Sollee’s lyrics are often jarringly honest, like in Only a Song – an intense, brooding track that leaves you to believe Sollee is either painfully self-aware or horrifically cynical. And the sinister swell of the title-track is a reminder that while as romantic and sweet as much of this album may seem, something wicked this way comes.

Jim James, the mastermind behind My Morning Jacket, helms the production on Dear Companion like an old pro. James’ understated approach, leaving the music thin and haunting, allows the collective voice and lyrics of Sollee and Moore to be the focal point throughout. The brash simplicity of these arrangements drive home a deep sense of personal isolation that makes the album feel distant, cold, and familiar.
