(RE)Sonance @ The Earth House - A Fundraising Event For Indy's Most Treasured All Ages Venue

This Saturday, May 1, The Earth House will host (RE)SONANCE; a fund-raising event that will benefit the venue's need for new sound system.  The Earth House Collective is a not-for-profit organization operated by local artists, musicians and volunteers.  The facility has the potential to become Indianapolis most treasured all ages venue.  We demonstrated the possibilities with the OK Go show last Wednesday.  If we can get a new sound system installed, this will instantly become a touring stop for national artists and will allow us to further our quest for more all ages shows in Indianapolis.  Plus the folks that run the Earth House are GOOD people, working hard for the love of music and community.  They are still seeking items for their silent auction.  If you have anything (or know someone who might) that you would like to donate to the silent auction, please email us at mokbpresents.com.  Details below. RSVP for the Facebook Event, while your there invite all your freinds!  This is important Indy, lets make it happen!

Saturday May 1, 2010
Times: 2pm-11PM
Silent Auction from 2pm-5pm - There are some great items included in the silent auction already such as a PBR fridge, Luna and Indy CD & Vinyl Gift Certificates, Tickets to Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Eiteljorg Museum, The Vogue concerts, MOKB concerts, Silk-Screened Posters from Mile 44, Recording Studio Sessions, DJ Services and more!

Live Music from: Mab Lab, Sarah Grain, Jascha, Know No Stranger, Orkestra Project and many more!
There will be all kinds of performances - music, art, poetry etc.

Tickets are only $12 in advance (you should buy one even if you can't attend) or make a donation online here

If you can't make it on Saturday, join us tomorrow (Friday) at the Upland Tasting Room at 49th & College, for Pint Night!  50% of all money generated from 6-9 pm will be donated to The Earth House Fundraiser.

Japandroids Contest Winners and Meet & Greet Photos

In case you missed it, we recently ran a couple very special Japandroids contests. We had a chance to spend some time with our winners at the show, and delivered the goods as promised.  Special thanks to Japandroids and Polyvinyl Records for making this possible.  And, thanks to Kehla West and Robert Wasson for supporting MOKB by purchasing advance tickets to our shows.

Fun Fact: We found out that our new friend, Robert Wasson, is actually a 6th grade science teacher who LOVES new music, garage rock, and vinyl.  How cool is that?

Mayer Hawthorne rolls into Indy tonight for show at Radio Radio

It's like Christmas morning over here at MOKB HQ.  We have been waiting for this Thursday for weeks.  Its finally here!  Tonight we are pleased to present to you, the Indianapolis debut of Mayer Hawthorne & the CountyIndianapolis Hip Hop legends, Mudkids will open the show with Twin Peaks spinning your favorite old soul records.  Tickets are available online today until 4pm.  Tickets will be available at the door for only $12.  Doors open at 8 PM - Get there early!  Indiana Vodka will be on hand conducting a free sampling of their tasty, Indiana-distilled Vodka.

Grab a free mp3 download over at My Old Kentucky Blog.

About Mayer Hawthorne
Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr.

After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. “He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love.” “It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.”
